Case IH 6023 – Transmission Controller (TRANS) / Tractor Electronic Management / Driveline Controller: FWD solenoid - open circuit

The control module has detected a lack of electrical continuity (an open circuit) in the circuit that powers the FWD engagement solenoid, preventing the controller from actuating the solenoid to engage or disengage the front axle drive.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the FWD/MFD solenoid for chafed wires, rodent damage, or severed lines.

   Disconnect the FWD solenoid plug and check for pushed-out pins, heavy corrosion, or moisture inside the connector.

   Measure the resistance across the two pins of the FWD solenoid coil using a multimeter to check for an open loop (OL) or infinite resistance.

   Test the wiring harness for continuity between the solenoid connector and the transmission ECU pins if the solenoid tests within normal resistance specs.

   Secure the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels.

   Access the Solenoid

   Locate the FWD/MFD solenoid valve block (usually located on the side of the transmission housing or the MFD transfer gearbox drop-box).

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire in the harness, splice and repair the wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the coil is open, clean the area, disconnect the electrical connector, unthread the retaining nut or unbolt the cartridge valve, remove the old solenoid/coil, inspect and lubricate O-rings with clean fluid, and install the new solenoid torqued to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly and Clearing Codes

   Reconnect the electrical harness, turn the key on, clear stored fault codes from the transmission controller, and test the FWD engagement switch in the cab to ensure the code does not return and the front axle engages.
