Case IH 6024 (564.15) - DEC – CCM (Chassis Control Module) or Transmission Controller (TCM): 2WD Solenoid - short to high voltage

Issue description

The FWD (Front Wheel Drive) / 2WD / MFD (Mechanical Front Drive) Solenoid circuit has a short circuit to battery (high voltage). The control module detects voltage on the solenoid's ground or control circuit when it should not be present, or the resistance is out of specification in a way that mimics a direct short to a 12V power source. This can cause erratic 4WD engagement or blow circuit fuses.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the MFD/2WD solenoid for rubbed-through wire insulation touching a 12V source

  2. Disconnect the solenoid connector and inspect for bent pins, water ingress, or corrosion that could bridge the power and control pins

  3. With the key ON and the solenoid disconnected, probe the harness side to check for 12V on the ground/return wire (indicates a short to power in the harness)

  4. Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins (if extremely low or outside the 6–10 ohm range, the coil is internally shorted)

  5. Ensure the alternator is not overcharging (outputting >14.7V), which can trigger false high-voltage codes

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the park brake, and turn off the engine. Chock the wheels.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the circuits by cycling the steering and remotes with the key on/engine off.

  3. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  4. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the 2WD/MFD solenoid valve. On Magnum and Puma models, it is typically found on the transmission valve stack or the transfer box drop-box.

  5. Remove the Solenoid Coil

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge. (If only the coil is shorted, you do not need to drain the hydraulic oil or remove the cartridge).

  6. Replace the Valve (If necessary)

    If the entire valve assembly is faulty, clean the surrounding area, unscrew the valve cartridge, and quickly install the new one to minimize fluid loss. Replace all O-rings.

  7. Reassembly

    Slide the new coil onto the stem, tighten the retaining nut, and plug in the connector.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use the tractor's instrumentation display or a diagnostic service tool to clear the 6024 fault code. Test drive to ensure 4WD engages and disengages properly.
