6024

Case IH 6024 – HITCH Controller: Hitch Raise Solenoid is failed open or shorted to the ground.

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical fault where the controller detects that the circuit for the hitch raise solenoid has either lost continuity (failed open, such as a broken wire or disconnected plug) or has shorted directly to the ground.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum Series
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285
  • STX / Steiger Series
  • TG Series
  • Puma Series
  • Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the hitch controller to the hitch raise solenoid for disconnected plugs, chafed wires, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the hitch raise solenoid and use a multimeter to check the resistance of the solenoid coil (an infinite reading indicates an open internal coil, while a reading of zero indicates an internal short).

  3. Test the wiring from the hitch controller pins to the solenoid connector for continuity and ensure there is no continuity to the tractor chassis (ground).

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

Identify the hitch raise solenoid on the tractor's hydraulic control valve block (refer to your specific model's hydraulic schematic).

  2. Test and Isolate

Perform the resistance and continuity tests mentioned above.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the solenoid tests within specification, the fault lies in the wiring. Repair or replace the damaged section of the harness between the hitch controller and the solenoid.

  4. Replace Solenoid (If Applicable)

If the solenoid coil fails the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/hardware holding the coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off and install the new replacement coil.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes from the HITCH controller, and test the hitch raise function.

  6. Calibration

Depending on the model, a hitch calibration may be required after servicing the hitch valves.
