Case IH 6024 - UCM – UCM / CCM: FWD solenoid – short circuit to Battery

Issue description

The control module is detecting unexpected voltage on the Four-Wheel Drive (FWD / MFD) solenoid circuit, indicating that the wiring is shorted directly to a 12V power source, or the solenoid coil itself has failed and shorted internally.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the FWD solenoid for melted insulation or chafed wires rubbing against the chassis or other powered wires (most common cause)

  2. Perform a magnetism test: With the key switch ON and the FWD switch OFF, place a small steel screwdriver against the FWD solenoid. If it is magnetized, the circuit is receiving unintended voltage

  3. Perform a solenoid swap test: Swap the FWD solenoid coil with an adjacent, identical solenoid (such as differential lock or reverse) to isolate the issue. If the fault code changes to match the new location, the solenoid is internally shorted. If code 6024 persists, the wiring harness is shorted to battery

  4. Perform a multimeter pin test: Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to check the FWD signal wire for continuity to battery positive (12V)

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare machine

    Park the tractor in a safe, clean, and level location. Apply the park brake and turn the key switch to the OFF position.

  2. Locate FWD solenoid

    Locate the FWD solenoid. On most Case IH models, it is located on the transmission control valve block (often at the bottom of the transmission behind the FWD clutch bulge, or on the FNR valve block at the lower rear of the cab).

  3. Disconnect solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the FWD solenoid.

  4. Repair wiring harness

    If the harness is damaged: Cut back the melted or chafed section of the wiring harness. Splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors to restore the circuit, ensuring it is routed away from heat sources or sharp edges.

  5. Remove faulty solenoid

    If the solenoid is faulty: Remove the retaining nut or circlip at the end of the solenoid valve stem.

  6. Remove old coil

    Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to drain the hydraulic fluid if you are only replacing the electromagnetic coil and not the inner hydraulic cartridge).

  7. Install new coil

    Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the circlip/nut.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Test and clear codes

    Turn the key ON, clear the stored fault codes in the UCM/CCM, and test the FWD engagement to verify the repair.
