6028 (564.11) - DEC

Case IH 6028 (564.11) - DEC – DEC: 2WD Solenoid - Generic Error

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical anomaly (such as an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or an out-of-range voltage) preventing the solenoid from properly actuating, usually resulting in the tractor being stuck in 4WD.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Steiger & STX Series (280, 350, 480, 535, 600)
  • Magnum Series (190, 200, 235-340, 7210)
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • TN/Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring from the DEC to the 2WD solenoid for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins at the connector.

  2. Test the Solenoid Coil: Unplug the 2WD solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the coil pins (infinite reading indicates an open internal coil, reading near zero indicates a dead short).

  3. Check Relays and Fuses: Verify that the 4WD/2WD switch on the dash is sending the correct signal and that the associated drivetrain relays are functioning properly.

  4. Check for Hydraulic Leaks: Ensure the valve block itself is not leaking fluid into the electrical connector, which can cause a short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate valve block

Locate the 2WD/4WD solenoid valve block (typically located on the side of the transmission housing or near the front axle drop box, depending on the model).

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness from the 2WD solenoid.

  4. Clean area

Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  5. Remove retaining nut

Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem.

  6. Remove faulty coil

Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (If the mechanical valve cartridge itself is stuck, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge from the manifold).

  7. Install new coil

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and tighten the retaining nut to the OEM torque specification.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Clear codes and test

Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes from the DEC via the cab display, and test the 2WD/4WD engagement to ensure the code does not return.
