Case IH 6031 – Driveline / 4WD / Transmission ECU: Voltage from the front shaft speed sensor (VAA) too low

This fault code indicates that the control module is receiving a voltage signal from the front shaft speed sensor (designated as the VAA sensor) that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the sensor wiring, a disconnected harness, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visually inspect the front shaft speed sensor (VAA) connector and wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins

   Disconnect the sensor, turn the key ON, and verify the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (5V or 12V) and has a solid ground

   Test the signal wire between the sensor connector and the 4WD ECU for continuity and ensure it is not shorted to ground

   Measure the internal resistance of the sensor to determine if it has failed internally (open or shorted)

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on hard, level ground. Turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and remove the key. Put blocks in front of and behind the wheels for safety.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the front shaft speed sensor (VAA) on the driveline.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Clean the area around the sensor base to prevent dirt from falling into the housing.

   Removal

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Carefully extract the sensor from its bore. (Note: Some transmission fluid or gear oil may weep depending on the sensor's exact location; have a rag ready).

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean oil. Insert the new sensor into the bore and install the retaining bolt, tightening it to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key ON and use the tractor's diagnostic display or the CNH EASY diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 6031 fault code.

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor and engage/disengage the 4WD system to verify that the front shaft speed is reading correctly and the fault code does not return.
