Case IH 6033 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / 4WD ECU: Voltage from the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) too low.

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the sensor wiring, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure of the speed sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) pigtail and main wiring harness for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. Turn the key to the ON position and use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V) from the ECU. Test the ground circuit for high resistance.

  4. If the wiring harness tests good (no shorts to ground and proper continuity back to the ECU pins), check the sensor resistance to determine if it has failed internally and is pulling the voltage down.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent short circuits.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the VAP rear shaft speed sensor on the rear axle housing or transmission case. Clean the area around the sensor thoroughly to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission housing.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical plug. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Gently twist and pull the sensor out of the housing.

  4. Installation

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new speed sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the new sensor into the bore and seat it fully. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.

  5. Reconnection

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  6. Clear Codes & Test

    Turn the battery disconnect back on. Cycle the key to verify if the code changes from 'Active' to 'Inactive.' Clear the fault codes via the Pro 1200 / AFS display or a diagnostic service tool. Test drive the tractor to ensure the rear shaft speed registers correctly and the code does not return.
