Case IH 6034 – 4WD ECU / Transmission Control Unit: Voltage from the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) too high.

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This typically indicates a short to power on the signal wire, an open ground circuit causing the voltage to float high, or an internal short within the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) on the transmission, transfer case, or rear axle housing and inspect the sensor housing, connector, and wiring harness for physical damage, chafing, or water ingress.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a digital multimeter to verify continuity on the sensor ground circuit to check for an open ground.

  3. With the key ON (engine off) and the sensor disconnected, measure the voltage on the signal wire to check for a short to power (reading a full 5V or 12V without the sensor plugged in).

  4. If the wiring harness tests perfectly, perform a sensor bench test as the sensor itself has likely failed internally and is bleeding reference voltage directly to the signal pin.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery master switch to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Safely secure the machine (apply parking brake, use wheel chocks). Locate the rear shaft speed sensor on the drivetrain.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness. Clean the area around the sensor base to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission/shaft housing. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the sensor out.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the sensor into the port, ensuring it seats fully without forcing it. Install and torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect and Route Wiring

    Plug in the electrical connector until it clicks. Ensure the wiring harness is secured away from moving shafts or high-heat sources.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect battery power. Use an electronic service tool (like the CNH EASY Tool) to clear the 6034 fault code. Test drive the machine, specifically engaging and disengaging 4WD, to verify that the rear shaft speed is reading correctly and the code does not return.
