Case IH 6036 – Steering / 4WD ECU: Rear Shaft Speed Sensor (VAP) Frequency Out of Range

The controller is detecting that the frequency signal from the Rear Shaft Speed Sensor (VAP) is out of the expected range, indicating that the control module is receiving erratic, missing, or incorrect rotational speed data from the rear axle or transmission output shaft.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) for chafing, cuts, or short circuits

   Disconnect the sensor and check the 3-pin connector for corrosion, moisture ingress, or loose terminals

   Check the physical mounting of the sensor to ensure it is not loose, which can increase the air gap and cause a weak signal

   Verify the sensor supply voltage and ground continuity, and test the output signal frequency while the shaft is rotating

   Inspect the internal tone ring/gear through the sensor mounting hole for missing teeth, damage, or heavy metallic debris buildup

   Prepare machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower any attachments (such as the telehandler boom), and turn off the engine.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the rear shaft speed sensor (VAP) on the rear axle housing or transmission rear output shaft.

   Clean area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the housing during removal.

   Disconnect connector

   Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove bolt

   Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor.

   Remove sensor

   Carefully pull the sensor out of its mounting bore.

   Install new sensor

   Insert the new OEM speed sensor into the bore, ensuring it seats completely flush.

   Tighten bolt

   Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

    Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the 3-pin electrical connector, ensuring the weather seal is intact and it clicks into place.

    Test machine

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), and test drive the machine to confirm the code does not return.
