6037

Case IH 6037 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or 4WD ECU: Inconsistent sensors (VAA) and (VAP)

Issue description

The fault code is triggered when the control unit detects a mismatch, erratic frequency, or inconsistent speed readings between the front and rear transmission shafts or axles.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Maxxum series
  • MXU series
  • Steiger
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harnesses and plug connections for both the front (VAA) and rear (VAP) speed sensors for rubbed wires, corrosion in the pins, or loose connections.

  2. Disconnect the sensors and test their resistance using a multimeter (a healthy transmission speed sensor typically measures around 3,000 ohms).

  3. Monitor live data using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) while driving to identify which sensor is dropping its signal or providing an erratic frequency.

  4. Ensure the sensors are mounted securely and that the mounting area is free of heavy debris or metallic shavings that could interfere with the magnetic pickup.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Based on your diagnostics, locate the faulty speed sensor. The VAA (front) and VAP (rear) sensors are typically located on the top or sides of the transmission housing, or directly on the rear axle housing.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the 3-wire electrical connector from the sensor.

  3. Remove

Unbolt or unthread the faulty speed sensor from the housing.

  4. Clean

Carefully clean the mounting port to ensure no dirt or debris falls into the transmission or axle housing.

  5. Install

Insert the new speed sensor and tighten it to factory specifications.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  7. Clear and Test

Clear the 6037 fault code using your diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor to verify that the front and rear speed signals are now consistent.
