Case IH 6038 – Combine Control Module (CCM), Header Height Control (HHC) module, 4WD ECU, Suspension Controller, or primary chassis control module: Voltage from tilt sensor too low

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the lateral tilt/slope sensor that has dropped below the minimum acceptable operating threshold (near 0V in a typical 5V reference circuit). This is typically caused by a short to ground in the sensor's signal wire, an open circuit or broken wire in the 5V supply line, or an internally failed or shorted tilt/slope sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the tilt sensor (on combines, it is typically located on the feeder house; on tractors/loaders, it is on the lift arm crossmember or linkage). Inspect the wiring harness and connector for physical damage, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving a 5V reference signal and has a good ground at the connector.

  3. Check the resistance across the sensor pins (e.g., Pins A and B, or A and C). A healthy sensor typically reads between 1000 Ω and 1500 Ω. If the reading is 0 Ω (shorted) or infinite (open), the sensor has failed internally.

  4. If the sensor tests good, check for continuity on the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the ECU to rule out a broken wire or a short to the chassis.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove any outer cover plates or shields protecting the tilt sensor assembly.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor. Carefully detach the mechanical linkage or lever connected to the sensor arm. Unbolt the sensor bracket and remove the faulty tilt sensor. Note: Do not apply excessive force to the linkage, as the internal components of these sensors are fragile.

  4. Installation

    Mount the new sensor to the bracket and reattach the mechanical linkage. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Calibration

    Reconnect the battery and power on the machine. You must perform a calibration procedure via the in-cab display (e.g., Pro 700 or VMM screen). Adjust the lateral tilt sensor mechanically or via the software until the display reads the baseline voltage (often 2.5 volts when perfectly level). Clear the inactive 6038 fault code.
