Case IH 6039: Slope Sensor too high

Issue description

A 'too high' fault condition on a 5-volt slope, tilt, or inclination sensor indicates that the sensor's signal voltage has exceeded the maximum acceptable threshold (typically above 4.5V to 4.8V). This usually points to a short to power, an open ground circuit, a failed internal component, or the sensor being physically knocked out of its calibrated mechanical range.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the sensor linkage and mounting bracket to ensure the sensor hasn't been physically damaged, bent, or pushed past its mechanical limits.

  2. Wiring Harness Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the 3-pin connector for dirt, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Voltage Test: With the key on (engine off), probe the harness connector. Verify a steady 5-volt reference signal from the ECU and a solid ground.

  4. Signal Circuit Test: Check the signal wire for a short to voltage. If the signal wire is shorted to the 5V reference or 12V battery power, the ECU will read the input as 'too high'.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

    Power down the machine and turn off the battery disconnect switch.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the slope/inclination sensor (location varies: often on the front axle for steering angle, or on the chassis/shoe linkage for combine leveling).

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove hardware and linkage

    Remove the mounting hardware and detach the mechanical linkage arm (if equipped).

  5. Install new sensor

    Install the new OEM sensor and loosely tighten the mounting hardware.

  6. Reattach linkage

    Reattach the mechanical linkage.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Calibrate sensor

    Power on the machine and navigate to the display monitor's calibration menu. Perform the mandatory sensor calibration procedure (often requiring the machine to be parked on a perfectly level surface) to zero out the sensor.

  9. Tighten hardware

    Tighten all mounting hardware to spec once calibration is successful.
