Case IH 6041 – Steering/4WD ECU: Voltage from steering angle sensor too high

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the steering angle sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold, indicating a short circuit to power (+12V or +5V) on the signal wire, or an open ground circuit in the sensor wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Harness Inspection: Inspect the steering angle sensor wiring harness running down to the front steering axle. Look for visible damage, rubbing, or pinched wires that could cause a short to power.

  2. Circuit Testing: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the sensor ground circuit for an open condition (high resistance). Then, check the signal wire for a short to a voltage source (+5V or +12V).

  3. Mechanical Linkage Check: Verify the sensor's physical mounting and linkage (such as the carrier position sensor control arm). Ensure the linkage is not bent, disconnected, or forcing the sensor past its maximum rotational limit.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the steering angle sensor on the front steering axle (or steering column, depending on the exact tractor configuration).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a short to power or an open ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the harness tests good, the internal potentiometer/Hall-effect sensor has likely failed internally. Remove the mounting hardware and linkage arm, and install the new steering angle sensor.

  5. Mechanical Centering

    Before final tightening, ensure the steering rack/axle is mechanically centered (wheels pointing perfectly straight).

  6. Software Calibration

    Reconnect the battery. You must perform a steering angle sensor calibration (Basic Setting / Zero Adjustment) using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's Pro display monitor. The auto-steer system will not function until the new sensor's center point and end-stops are learned by the ECU.
