Case IH 6042: Steering Switch too low

A "too low" designation on a switch or sensor fault typically indicates a Voltage Below Normal or Short to Ground condition. The control module monitors the return voltage from the steering switch (which could be a steering angle sensor, emergency steering switch, or power steering pressure switch). If the voltage drops below the minimum acceptable threshold (usually near 0V), the system logs a "too low" fault, indicating that the circuit is either shorted to ground or has an open circuit preventing the reference voltage from returning.

   Check Battery and Grounds: Ensure the machine's battery voltage is within spec and that the cab and chassis grounds are clean and tight.

   Visual Inspection: Locate the steering switch (often located on the steering column or near the orbital steering valve) and inspect the wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

   Check Reference Voltage: Disconnect the steering switch harness. Turn the key to the ON position and use a multimeter to measure the reference voltage at the connector (typically 5V or 12V depending on the system).

   Continuity Test: Test the switch itself for continuity. If the switch is internally shorted or fails to open/close properly when actuated, it must be replaced.

   Harness Pin-Out: Check the signal wire between the switch connector and the ECU for continuity and ensure it is not shorted to the chassis ground.

   Park the machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Remove shrouds or panels

   Remove the steering column shrouds or access panels to reach the steering switch assembly.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the switch.

   Remove switch

   Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips holding the switch in place. (If it is a hydraulic pressure switch on the steering valve, place a catch pan underneath and cap the hydraulic lines immediately to prevent contamination).

   Install new switch

   Install the new steering switch and secure the mountings to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Reinstall shrouds or panels

   Reinstall any removed shrouds or panels.

   Reconnect battery

   Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

    Clear codes and test

    Turn the key ON and clear the inactive fault codes from the diagnostic display, then test the steering functions to verify the repair.
