Case IH 6094 – PTO Controller: MFD (Mechanical Front Drive) Solenoid has failed Open or Short Circuit

Issue description

The MFD solenoid valve controls the engagement and disengagement of the front-wheel assist clutch. The fault code triggers when the controller detects an electrical open or short in this solenoid's circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • Case IH MX Series Magnum Tractors (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (180, 190, 210)

Check the cause

  1. Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor to access the PTO controller.

  2. Disconnect the black connector (C057) from the PTO controller.

  3. Inspect Pin 10 in the connector for corrosion or damage. Clean the mating pin and connector.

  4. Test the resistance (continuity) between Pin 10 and the chassis ground. The resistance of the MFD solenoid circuit should be approximately 5.6 to 6.6 ohms.

  5. If the resistance is out of spec (infinite/open or zero/shorted), check the wiring harness leading to the transmission. If the wiring is intact, the solenoid coil has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

The MFD solenoid valve is mounted externally on top of the range transmission. Specifically, it is the front coil located on the range powershift manifold.

  2. Disconnect Power

Ensure the tractor is off and the key is removed.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

Locate and disconnect the electrical connector to the MFD solenoid (identified in wiring schematics as Connector No. 160).

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Unbolt/unscrew the faulty MFD solenoid valve from the manifold. Be prepared for a small amount of hydraulic oil to leak.

  5. Replace Seals/O-Rings

If reusing the valve body or installing a new cartridge, ensure the O-rings are replaced and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

Thread the new solenoid into the manifold and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect and Clear

Reconnect Connector No. 160, power on the tractor, clear the fault codes, and test the MFD engagement to ensure the code does not return.
