Case IH 61 – Transmission ECM: HI_LO_SYNCRO_SW_HI_DIS_ERR 16 CP/SL Dis
Issue description
Voltage from the Synchronizer Hi-Lo (Forward) Position Switch is shorted to 5 or 12 Volts. The Transmission Status Lamp on the dash (the Hi/Rabbit and Lo/Turtle lamps) will flash in an alternating manner.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- JXC
- Case IH Farmall series
- Case IH JX series
Check the cause
Locate the Synchronizer Shuttle (Reverse) and Hi-Lo (Forward) Position Switches on the left side of the transmission
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the switch on the left side of the transmission for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to a 5V or 12V power source
Disconnect the switch and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or debris
Using a multimeter, test the signal wire between the Transmission ECM and the switch connector to verify if the short to power (5V or 12V) is in the wiring harness or internal to the switch itself
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Switch
Locate the Synchronizer Hi-Lo (Forward) Position Switch on the left side of the transmission housing.
Harness Repair
If the multimeter test revealed a short in the harness, locate the damaged section of the wire, splice in a repair wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.
Replace the Switch
If the harness tests good, the switch has failed internally. Unthread the faulty switch from the transmission housing. Install the new switch and tighten to OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the switch and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
The fault code must be cleared from the Transmission ECM. According to the service manual, the cause must be resolved and the error must be cleared using the CDU (Customer Diagnostic Unit) or the EST (Electronic Service Tool) via the HF Menu.
