Case IH 6116 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Lube Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground (when the valve is ON).
Issue description
The transmission controller detects that the voltage on the low side of the lube solenoid coil is lower than expected. This indicates a disruption in the electrical circuit powering the transmission's lube valve solenoid.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- STX Steiger
- Puma 125
- Puma 130
- Puma 140
- Puma 145
- Puma 160
- Steiger 385
- STX series
- Magnum series
- Maxxum series
Check the cause
Test the lube valve solenoid coil with a multimeter to see if it has failed open.
Inspect the wire running between the lube valve solenoid and the transmission controller for an open circuit or a short to ground.
Verify if there is power available from the neutral latch relay (an open circuit in the solenoid power wire will cause this fault).
Test the transmission controller for an internal short in the Lube Valve Coil circuit if the wiring, relay, and solenoid coil all test good.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the transmission wiring.
Repair/Replace Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or a broken wire between the transmission controller and the lube valve solenoid, repair the wire or replace the affected harness section.
Restore Power Delivery
If no power is reaching the solenoid from the neutral latch relay, trace the power wire back to the relay. Replace the relay or repair the open circuit in the power wire.
Replace the Solenoid Coil
If the lube valve solenoid coil tested open, remove the defective coil from the transmission valve block and install a new one.
Replace the Transmission Controller
If all external circuits and components are intact, replace the transmission controller.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
After the physical repair is complete, reconnect the battery. Use the tractor's display (Trans Setup Menu) or a diagnostic tool to retrieve and clear the fault codes. Finally, perform a full Transmission Controller Calibration (ensuring the transmission fluid is at operating temperature) to ensure the new components sync properly.
