Case IH 62 – PTO Controller: Excessive load or pto configuration incorrect, check alternator W terminal. Test pto solenoid. Check regulated pressure and pto supply pressure.

Issue description

The PTO controller monitors the engine RPM via a frequency (Hertz) signal coming from the alternator's W terminal and compares it to the PTO shaft speed sensor. If the alternator's W terminal signal is faulty, missing, or out of spec, the controller receives an incorrect engine RPM reading, causing a false slip detection that triggers code 62 and disengages the PTO.

Check the cause

  1. Test the Hertz (Hz) reading at the alternator's W terminal with the engine running to verify alternator tachometer output (1100 RPM = 277–338 Hz; 1500 RPM = 378–462 Hz; 2200 RPM = 554–677 Hz).

  2. Inspect the W terminal wire connection at the back of the alternator (a loose or corroded wire is a highly common cause of false slip detection).

  3. Test the PTO speed sensor resistance with an ohmmeter (should read 2700–3300 ohms).

  4. Disconnect the PTO solenoid and measure resistance across its pins (should read 6.0–10.0 ohms).

  5. Connect a pressure gauge to the PTO regulated pressure port to verify hydraulic pressure (should be 335–345 PSI).

Repair steps

  1. Repair Alternator Wiring

    If the W terminal wire is loose, cut back the wire to clean copper, crimp on a new terminal connector, and secure it to the alternator. Clear the codes and test the PTO.

  2. Replace the Alternator

    If the Hertz readings are out of specification during the diagnostic test, disconnect the battery, relieve the serpentine belt tension, replace the alternator, and verify belt tension upon reassembly.

  3. Replace the PTO Solenoid

    If the alternator tests fine but the PTO solenoid resistance is out of the 6–10 ohm range, replace the PTO solenoid cartridge valve located on the hydraulic valve block.

  4. Replace the PTO Speed Sensor

    If the speed sensor fails the resistance test, unthread it from the top cover of the rear frame transmission housing and install a new sensor.

  5. Reconfigure the Computer

    After replacing the faulty component, use the tractor's monitor display or a dealer service tool to clear the stored fault codes and reconfigure the PTO computer module.
