Case IH 62 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller or Armrest Controller: Communications Lost with Performance Monitor Function

Issue description

The tractor's control network (CAN bus) has lost the data link between the primary controller and the Performance Monitor (the digital display/instrument cluster).

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX200, MX240, MX255, MX305, 215, 245, 275, 310, 335)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (STX280, STX500)
  • Case IH Puma Series (130, 145, 160, 200)
  • Case IH TG Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH MXU Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the fuses supplying the cab displays to verify power and ground to the monitor.

  2. Inspect the display screen visually; flashing, missing lines, or a completely blank screen indicates internal monitor failure.

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors between the TMF controller and the Performance Monitor for pinched wires in the A-pillar or corrosion at the pins.

  4. Check for companion codes (e.g., TMF 24). Multiple communication codes point to a severed CAN bus wire or a failing TMF controller rather than the monitor itself.

  5. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ping the Performance Monitor on the network to verify if it is communicating.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during module removal.

  2. Access the Monitor

Remove the plastic trim panels surrounding the Performance Monitor on the corner post or armrest.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

Carefully unplug the main electrical connector(s) at the back of the monitor. Inspect the pins for pushed-out terminals or green corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Replace the Monitor

Remove the mounting hardware and swap the Performance Monitor unit. Note: If replacing an older MX-series monitor, it often requires a completely new corner post assembly and an adapter harness.

  5. Dealer Programming

Once installed, a dealer technician must connect the EST laptop to flash the correct tractor software and configuration into the new display.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the EST or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to clear the inactive TMF 62 fault code.

Parts you might need

  • Performance Monitor / Corner Post Display

Varies heavily by exact model and cab configuration. Older MX Magnums often require purchasing a complete updated corner post kit and a separate adapter harness.
