Case IH 627-03 - VCM – VCM / UCM: Power supply voltage out of range high

The electrical power supply voltage feeding the steering valve controller (or the module itself) has exceeded the maximum safe threshold of 16 VDC, which may cause the controller to lock out certain functions (like automated steering/AccuGuide) or fail to exit its boot block program to protect internal circuitry.

   Measure system voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running (if reading above 15.5V - 16V DC, the alternator is overcharging)

   Inspect the wiring harness between the VCM and the steering valve for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation causing a short-to-power

   Disconnect the steering valve connector, turn the key ON, and measure the power supply pins (if >16V, the fault is in the VCM or harness)

   Verify that the VCM and steering valve grounds are clean and tight, as a floating ground can cause reference voltages to float abnormally high

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Address Overcharging

   If the alternator was found to be overcharging during the diagnostic phase, replace the alternator assembly.

   Repair Wiring

   If a short-to-power was located in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire. Solder in a new section of wire and seal it with marine-grade, adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing.

   Replace the Steering Valve

   If the harness and VCM output are normal but the code persists when the valve is plugged in, the valve's internal controller is faulty. Relieve hydraulic pressure, cap the hydraulic lines to prevent contamination, unbolt the steering valve, and install the replacement unit.

   Replace the VCM

   If the VCM itself is internally shorted and sending >16V to the valve, replace the VCM. (Note: A new VCM will require flashing/calibration using the CNH Electronic Service Tool).

   Reassembly & Clearing Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port, clear the 627-03 fault code, and perform a steering calibration test to verify the repair.
