Case IH 628-12 - VCM – VCM: Internal Failure within the control module

The Steering Valve Controller has failed its internal EEPROM/Flash memory test at power-up, a flash memory erase/write procedure has failed, or the controller is stuck in a reprogramming state (boot block generated).

• AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
• Steiger Tractors (e.g., Steiger 370)
• Patriot Sprayers (e.g., 3240, 3340, 4440)

   Cycle the machine's key power to see if the controller can successfully pass its EEPROM test on a fresh reboot.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors (e.g., X653, X654) at the Steering Valve Controller for loose pins, corrosion, or voltage drops that might cause communication loss or boot failure.

   Check if a recent software update was interrupted, which may leave the controller stuck in a boot block state waiting for a flash file.

   Reconnect Harness

   Disconnect battery power, unplug the VCM/Steering Controller connectors, inspect them, and firmly reconnect them. Restore power and check if the code clears.

   Reprogram the Controller

   Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST). If the controller is stuck in a boot block or has a flash memory error, attempt to re-flash/reprogram the Steering Valve Controller software.

   Calibrate

   If the flash is successful, perform a full steering system and wheel angle sensor calibration to clear the error.

   Replace the Module

   If the controller fails to accept the programming, fails the EEPROM test repeatedly, or the 628-12 code immediately returns (indicating permanent hardware failure), the Steering Valve Controller must be replaced.

   Post-Replacement

   Program the new controller with the correct machine dataset and perform a steering calibration.
