Case IH 629-03 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve): ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault

The fault code indicates an Internal Fault within the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV). Technically, this means the module has detected a failure within its own internal circuitry, memory, or processing components.

   Verify Power and Ground: Check the main power and ground circuits to the ITBV module. Voltage drops or poor grounds can cause the microprocessor to log internal errors.

   Inspect the Harness: Inspect the dual hydraulic trailer brake wire harness (associated with catalog section 55.032.AC) for chafing, shorts, or corrosion at the connector.

   Check Associated Sensors: Verify the hydraulic trailer brake pressure sensor (catalog section 55.032.AH) is not shorted, as a shorted 5V reference can sometimes crash the module.

   Software Version Check: Check the current software version on the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV). The updated software version is 1.3.0.0 (Software Part Number: 51595354). A re-flash may be required before replacing hardware.

   Power Down

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical arcing.

   Locate the ITBV

   Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly and its attached ECU.

   Disconnect

   Carefully unplug the main harness connector from the ITBV ECU. Inspect the pins on the harness side one last time for pushed-out pins or moisture intrusion.

   Remove the Module

   Unbolt the faulty ITBV ECU/Valve assembly from its mounting bracket.

   Install the New Part

   Mount the replacement ITBV module (Part # 51693610) and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the locking tab is fully seated.

   Program/Flash

   Reconnect the battery. Using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), flash the new ITBV module with the latest software (Part # 51595354) and perform any required end-of-line calibrations for the trailer brake system.

   Test

   Clear all inactive fault codes and perform a functional test of the trailer brakes to ensure the 629-03 code does not return.
