629-04 - ITBV

Case IH 629-04 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault

Issue description

The controller's internal self-diagnostics detect a critical hardware or memory failure (such as an EEPROM error or internal circuitry malfunction), which disables the automated safety control that equalizes the braking effect between the tractor and the trailer.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 180
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 200
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 220
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 240
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 250
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 280
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 310
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 340
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 380

Check the cause

  1. Check the power supply and ground circuits to the ITBV to ensure the internal fault isn't being falsely triggered by severe voltage drops.

  2. Use the diagnostic connector to verify CAN bus integrity (Pin C/D for CAN 1 Main Bus, Pin H/J for CAN 4 Implement Bus).

  3. Check the differential pressure sensor and brake pedal switches for plausibility, as related faults log if the sensor reports an internal fault, under-voltage, or out-of-range signal.

  4. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check the current software version of the ITBV, as software corruption can mimic a hard internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect Wiring

Visually inspect the wiring harness, dust caps, and connectors (e.g., X-386F connector) at the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or damaged pins.

  2. Reprogram the ECU

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the ISO 11783 standard diagnostic connector. Attempt to reflash the ITBV with the latest software (e.g., software version 1.3.0.0).

  3. Evaluate

Cycle the key. If the 629-04 internal fault code clears and does not return, the issue was a software/memory glitch.

  4. Replace the ITBV

If the module refuses the flash or the internal fault code immediately returns, the ITBV hardware has failed and the pneumatic valve assembly must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly and Calibration

Install the new ITBV, reconnect the pneumatic lines (such as the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube), and use the EST to calibrate the new module to the tractor's CAN network. Clear all historical fault codes.
