629-11 - ITBV

Case IH 629-11 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault

Issue description

The controller's operating system has detected an internal hardware or logic failure, often prompting the control system to reboot or lock out the trailer brake functions for safety.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Case IH Farmall Tractors (Models 40, 45, 50, 100C, 115U)

Check the cause

  1. Test the system voltage at the ITBV harness to ensure the alternator/regulator is not overcharging the system (System Overvoltage).

  2. Verify that the ITBV module is not being exposed to excessive external heat from exhaust or hydraulic system anomalies.

  3. Inspect the pneumatic trailer brake wire harness (PN 48127417) for chafing, melted insulation, or shorts to power/ground.

  4. Check the trailer brake rocker switch and the 1MPa pressure sensor on the ITBV block to ensure they are not sending erratic binary inputs to the controller.

  5. Clear the code and cycle the battery power. If the code immediately returns upon key-on, the internal circuitry of the ITBV is permanently damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical shorts or software corruption.

  2. Locate the ITBV

Locate the Trailer Brake Control valve block and ECU assembly (typically mounted near the rear hydraulic shuttle valves).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the main wire harness from the ITBV ECU.

  4. Disconnect Lines

Carefully relieve any residual hydraulic/pneumatic pressure. Disconnect the hydraulic tubes running from the shuttle valve and solenoid to the ITBV.

  5. Remove the Module

Remove the protective cover and unbolt the ITBV ECU (secured by M8 x 48mm hex socket screws).

  6. Install New Module

Mount the replacement ITBV ECU and torque the mounting hardware to OEM spec. Reconnect all hydraulic/pneumatic lines and the electrical harness.

  7. Software Calibration

Reconnect the battery. A dealer technician must use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the new ITBV module with the correct software (e.g., software version 1.3.0.0 for Magnum tractors) and calibrate the trailer brake system.
