Case IH 63 – EDC Microprocessor / Electronic Management Unit (Hitch Controller): EDC Hydraulic Valve Lower Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
This code indicates that the controller has detected an open circuit (a broken wire, disconnected plug, or a burnt-out internal coil) in the circuit for the lower solenoid on the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) hydraulic hitch valve.

Check the cause
Cycle power by turning the key OFF, then ON to see if the code remains active
Disconnect the hydraulic control valve connector (C218) and measure the resistance of the lower solenoid coil (should be approximately 8 ohms)
Disconnect the EDC microprocessor connector (C127) and check for continuity between the valve connector pins and the microprocessor pins (e.g., C218-2 to C127-19, and C218-1 to C127-27)
Supply 12 volts and ground directly to the lower solenoid pins (do not ground to the control module) with the engine running to test if the hitch lowers mechanically
Repair steps
Ensure Safety
Lower the 3-point hitch to the ground (if possible) or mechanically support it. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery.
Access the EDC Valve
Locate the EDC hydraulic valve block, typically mounted with the remote control valves at the rear of the tractor.
Wiring Repair
If step 3 of the diagnostics revealed an open circuit in the harness, trace the wiring from the EDC controller to the valve. Locate the chafed or broken wire, splice in a repair using weather-sealed connectors, and secure the harness away from pinch points.
Solenoid Replacement
If the coil failed the resistance test, unplug the electrical connector from the lower solenoid.
Remove retaining hardware
Remove the retaining nut or clip holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem.
Remove old coil
Slide the old coil off the valve cartridge.
Install new coil
Slide the new OEM replacement coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear Codes & Calibrate
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify the fault code is cleared. You may need to run the hitch calibration procedure via the H-Menu to ensure the EDC valve raise and lower thresholds are properly set.
Parts you might need
(2)EDC Hydraulic Valve Lower Solenoid / Hitch Valve Coil
Ensure you are replacing the lower solenoid, as the raise and lower solenoids are sometimes located on opposite sides of the valve stack.
