Case IH 64 – Electronic Management Unit (EMU) or Central Controller (XCM): EDC Hydraulic Valve Raise Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The Electronic Draft Control (EDC) system manages the rear 3-point hitch. This code indicates that the controller has detected a break in electrical continuity (an open circuit) in the wiring or the internal coil of the solenoid responsible for raising the hitch.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • MXU Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power (Key OFF, Key ON) and retest to see if the code is active or stored

  2. Inspect connections at the EDC hydraulic control valve block (connector C217) for corroded, pushed-back, or broken pins

  3. Measure resistance across the pins for the raise solenoid coil using a multimeter (an infinite/OL reading confirms the coil is internally open)

  4. Check the wiring harness for a break or chafe between the EMU/XCM and the valve connector if the coil tests within normal resistance

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize

Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and the rear hitch is fully lowered to relieve hydraulic pressure in the circuit.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness from the EDC raise solenoid.

  3. Remove Solenoid

Remove the retaining nut or fastener holding the solenoid coil to the EDC valve cartridge. Slide the faulty coil off the valve stem. (Note: On some specific valve blocks, the OEM does not sell the coil separately, requiring the replacement of the entire EDC control valve assembly).

  4. Install New Part

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it, or bolt the new EDC valve block into place if replacing the whole assembly.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back in.

  6. Calibrate

Start the tractor. You must perform the EDC Valve Solenoid Calibration procedure via the tractor's H-Menu or diagnostic tool to teach the EMU the current draw and engagement thresholds of the new solenoid.

  7. Test

Operate the rear hitch raise/lower switch to confirm the fault code is cleared and the hitch functions properly.
