Case IH 65 – TRANS: Operator attempted a shuttle operation while out of the seat

Issue description

This code is triggered when the operator moves the FNRP (Forward-Neutral-Reverse-Park) shuttle lever to change the tractor's direction, but the operator presence switch (seat switch) does not detect weight in the seat. As a safety mechanism, the transmission will not engage the requested gear.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series
  • MX / MXM Series
  • Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for related codes (66, 67, 68, or 69) which indicate a short in the FNRP pod switches rather than a seat switch issue.

  2. Inspect the seat switch wiring under the seat suspension for pinched wires, disconnected plugs, or damaged insulation.

  3. Test the seat switch for continuity (should be 'Open' when empty and 'Closed' when weight is applied).

  4. If equipped with an air ride seat, ensure the air line fitting connected to the switch hasn't blown out.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Access the Switch

Move the seat to its highest suspension setting or tilt it forward (depending on the cab configuration) to access the underside of the seat cushion.

  3. Disconnect Harness

Unplug the electrical connector from the seat switch.

  4. Remove the Old Switch

Depending on the seat manufacturer (e.g., Grammer), the switch may be a twist-mount, held in by a retaining clip, or secured with rivets/screws. Remove the fastener and pull the switch out of the seat base.

  5. Install the New Switch

Insert the new operator presence switch into the mounting hole and secure it.

  6. Reconnect and Route Wiring

Plug the electrical harness back in. Ensure the wire is routed safely away from the scissor mechanism of the seat suspension so it does not get pinched.

  7. Test Operation

Sit in the seat, start the tractor, and attempt to shift from Neutral to Forward and Reverse. Verify that the transmission engages and Fault Code 65 is cleared.
