Case IH 6583-04 - DEC – Electronic Transmission Controller (TCU): Transmission Hydrostatic Loop 1 Pressure (Pressure A) - Voltage below normal, or shorted to low source

Issue description

The electronic control system is detecting an abnormally low voltage signal from the hydrostatic transmission loop 1 pressure sensor. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the sensor's wiring harness, a loss of the 5V reference signal, or an internal failure of the pressure sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Transmission Hydrostatic Loop 1 Pressure sensor for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Voltage Test: With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to check the sensor connector. You should see a 5V reference signal and a good ground.

  4. Harness Continuity: If the 5V reference is missing, test the wire from the sensor connector back to the Transmission Control Unit for continuity or a short to ground.

  5. Sensor Verification: If the wiring is intact and the 5V reference is present at the connector, the sensor has likely failed internally (shorted to ground) and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery ground cable.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the Transmission Hydrostatic Loop 1 Pressure sensor. It is typically threaded directly into the hydrostatic pump, transmission valve block, or the central hydraulic lift circuit.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt or debris from contaminating the hydraulic system when the sensor is removed.

  4. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty pressure sensor. Have a shop rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid that may weep from the port.

  6. Prepare new sensor

    Apply a small dab of hydraulic-safe thread sealant to the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied with an O-ring or sealant).

  7. Install new sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the port and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  9. Restore power and check fluid

    Reconnect the battery, start the machine, and check the transmission fluid level.

  10. Clear code and test

    Use the in-cab display or a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 6583-04 fault code. Test drive the machine to ensure the code does not return and the transmission shifts/operates smoothly.
