Case IH 66 – EDC (Electronic Draft Control) module: EDC Hydraulic Valve Raise Solenoid Short Circuit

Issue description

The system has detected a short circuit—either internally within the solenoid coil itself or externally in the wiring harness—on the circuit responsible for actuating the hydraulic valve that raises the rear hitch.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series
  • MXM120
  • MXM130
  • MXM140
  • MXM155
  • MXM175
  • MXM190
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Farmall Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the EDC controller to the rear hydraulic valve block for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the raise solenoid at the rear remote valve block and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the resistance across the pins of the raise solenoid coil and compare to the lower solenoid coil; a reading near zero indicates an internal short.

  4. With the solenoid unplugged, test the harness-side connector for continuity to ground on the power supply wire to rule out a wiring short.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Lower the rear hitch completely to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the EDC hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor. The raise and lower solenoids are typically stacked on the remote valve (one on top, one on the bottom).

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty raise solenoid.

  4. Remove the Coil

Remove the retaining nut or locking ring holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil assembly off the valve cartridge.

  5. Install New Parts

Slide the new solenoid coil assembly onto the valve stem. (It is highly recommended to replace the backup ring/seal at this time). Secure it with the retaining nut/locking ring.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new solenoid and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  7. Calibration

You must perform the EDC (Electronic Draft Control) hydraulic lift calibration procedure via the tractor's instrument cluster (H-Menu) or diagnostic tool to ensure proper operation and to clear the fault code.

Parts you might need
