Case IH 66 – PTO Controller: Has engine stalled? Disengage pto and restart. Check alternator speed signal at W terminal.
Issue description
This code indicates that the control module has lost the engine speed (RPM) signal while the Power Take-Off (PTO) is engaged, or it detects that the engine has stalled. The system relies on the 'W' terminal on the alternator, which outputs an AC frequency signal (typically around 300 to 670 Hz and ~6.7V depending on RPM) to monitor engine speed. If this signal drops out, the controller disengages the PTO for safety and logs this code.

Check the cause
Verify engine status: Confirm whether the engine actually stalled under load. If it did, simply disengage the PTO switch, restart the tractor, and clear the code.
Check alternator output: With the engine running, use a multimeter to measure the frequency (Hz) and AC voltage at the alternator's 'W' terminal. It should read approximately 6.7V and fluctuate between 300 Hz (idle) and 670 Hz (high idle).
Test wiring continuity: Run a temporary test wire directly from the alternator 'W' terminal to the PTO controller (specifically pin C056-1 on MX models) to bypass the factory harness. If the PTO works with the test wire, the factory wiring harness has a break or short.
Check PTO solenoid circuit: Disconnect the PTO solenoid connector (C057). Measure the resistance between pins C057-5 and C057-4. A healthy solenoid should measure between 6.0 and 6.8 ohms at 25°C (100°F).
Inspect the alternator belt: Ensure the alternator drive belt is not slipping, missing, or loose, as this will stop the alternator from generating the speed signal.
Repair steps
Harness Repair
If the continuity test fails, trace the wire from the alternator W terminal to the PTO controller. Locate the break, chafe, or corroded connector and splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors.
Alternator Replacement
If the wiring is intact but the W terminal is not outputting a frequency signal while the engine is running, the alternator's internal regulator/stator is damaged. Disconnect the battery, remove the drive belt, unbolt the alternator, and install a replacement unit ensuring the W terminal is securely connected.
PTO Solenoid Replacement
If the solenoid failed the resistance test, relieve hydraulic pressure, disconnect the C057 electrical connector, unthread the faulty PTO solenoid valve from the transmission/valve block, and install a new solenoid. Reconnect the harness and test PTO engagement.
