66

Case IH 66 – Transmission Controller (Trans): Forward switch input from the FNRP Pod is shorted to ground or is open circuit

Issue description

The controller is not receiving the expected voltage signal from the forward position switch on the shuttle lever, preventing the machine from registering a command to move forward.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • JXC
  • Case IH Magnum 235 – 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH STX Steiger series (e.g., STX 325, 435)

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the shuttle lever back and forth to free up physically stuck switches, and try commanding the tractor to drive in reverse to see if the reverse circuit functions normally.

  2. Retrieve all active fault codes to determine if code 66 is accompanied by code 68.

  3. Carefully inspect the harness connectors for the FNRP pod (specifically connectors C051 and C027) for bent, pushed-back, or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Assess the 5V Supply vs. Forward Circuit

If fault code 66 is active ALONG WITH fault code 68: There is a high probability the failure is in the 5V supply circuit. If fault code 66 is active WITHOUT fault code 68: The failure is highly likely isolated to the Forward circuit.

  2. Test the Wiring Harness

Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity and shorts to ground. For the 5V Supply Circuit (Codes 66 & 68): Check the wiring between Pin 8 of connector C051 and Pin 16 of connector C027 for an open circuit or short. For the Forward Circuit (Code 66 only): Check the wiring between Pin 6 of connector C051 and Pin 13 of connector C027 for an open circuit or short.

  3. Repair Wiring

If an open circuit or short to ground is found in the harness between these pins, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the FNRP Pod

If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no opens, no shorts to ground, and pins are tight), the internal forward switch inside the FNRP shuttle lever pod has failed. The pod/lever assembly will need to be replaced.

Parts you might need
