Case IH 68 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Reverse switch input from the FNRP (Forward/Neutral/Reverse/Park) Pod is shorted to ground or open circuit

Issue description

The controller is either not receiving a voltage signal from the reverse position of the shuttle lever (open circuit) or the signal wire is grounding out prematurely.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the shuttle lever back and forth multiple times to free up a potentially mechanically stuck switch inside the pod.

  2. Turn the key to the 'ON' position and monitor the shuttle position display on the instrumentation cluster. Shift the FNRP lever through all positions to see if the Reverse icon fails to light up or lights up simultaneously with Park or Forward.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness running from the FNRP pod to the transmission controller for bent pins, loose pins, or wire chafing and damage.

  4. Using a multimeter, test the 5V reference supply circuit and the Reverse signal circuit for continuity to ensure there is no open circuit or short to ground between the pod connector and the transmission controller connector.

Repair steps

  1. Power down and disconnect battery

    Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Remove trim panels

    Remove the trim panels on the armrest or steering column (depending on the model) to access the FNRP pod assembly.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the FNRP pod.

  4. Perform continuity test

    Perform a final continuity test on the harness side of the connector. If the harness tests good (no shorts to ground, no open wires to the TRANS controller), the internal reverse switch of the FNRP pod has failed.

  5. Remove faulty assembly

    Unbolt and remove the faulty FNRP pod or lever assembly. (Note: On most modern Case IH models, the internal switches are not serviced separately; the lever or pod assembly must be replaced as a unit).

  6. Install new assembly

    Install the new FNRP pod/lever and reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Reassemble and reconnect

    Reassemble the trim panels, reconnect the battery, and turn the key ON.

  8. Verify repair

    Verify that the fault code is cleared and that the transmission engages Reverse properly without throwing the alarm.
