684-03 - VCM

Case IH 684-03 - VCM – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / Transmission Controller: VCM: Inching (clutch) pedal sensor voltage high

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected the clutch (inching) pedal position potentiometer signal is out of range high (often > 4.8V). This is usually caused by incorrect calibration, internal sensor failure, or a wire harness failure resulting in an open circuit or a short to power.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • CVX
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Check the clutch (inching) pedal operation mechanically to ensure there is no dirt, debris, or floor mat obstructing the pedal and that the return spring pulls the pedal fully back to the released position.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the clutch pedal position potentiometer for an open circuit or a short to a 5V/12V power source.

  3. Verify that the potentiometer (mounted on the steering column side of the clutch pedal) is securely mounted and hasn't vibrated loose.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Sensor

Locate the clutch pedal position potentiometer, which is mounted on the steering column side of the clutch pedal assembly.

  2. Test the Circuit

Disconnect the sensor. Turn the key ON and verify the reference voltage from the transmission controller is correct (typically 5V) and that the ground circuit is intact.

  3. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring tests good and the pedal mechanically returns to the top of its travel, the potentiometer has failed internally. Remove the backing plate/mounting screws and swap in the new clutch pedal potentiometer.

  4. Calibrate the New Sensor

You must perform the Transmission Controller Calibration procedure (specifically the clutch pedal calibration) using the tractor's H-Menu/instrument cluster or an electronic service tool. The controller must learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values of the replacement sensor. Ensure the pedal is fully released when setting the upper limit.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Clutch Pedal Position Potentiometer (Inching Pedal Sensor)

    82011878

Ensure you are purchasing the genuine CNH potentiometer, as aftermarket sensors often have slight voltage variance that can cause calibration to fail.
