Case IH 684-04 - VCM – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) or Transmission Controller (TCU): Inching (clutch) pedal sensor signal voltage low

Issue description

The inching pedal (commonly referred to as the clutch pedal) uses a rotary potentiometer to relay its physical position to the tractor's computer. The sensor operates on a 5-volt reference circuit. A "signal voltage low" error means the control module is receiving a voltage reading from the sensor's signal wire that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold (typically below 0.2V - 0.5V).

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the base of the clutch pedal assembly. Look for rubbed wires, pulled pins, or corrosion inside the connector.

  2. Mechanical Check: Verify that the clutch pedal linkage is intact, the return spring is functioning, and the sensor is securely mounted. A loose sensor can rotate with the pedal shaft and output an incorrect voltage.

  3. Voltage Supply Test: Disconnect the sensor. Turn the key to the ON position. Use a multimeter to verify that the sensor connector is receiving a 5V reference from the VCM and has a solid ground.

  4. Signal Wire Continuity: Test the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the VCM harness for continuity. Check that the signal wire is not shorted to the chassis ground.

  5. Sensor Sweep Test: If the wiring is good, back-probe the signal wire with the sensor plugged in. Slowly depress and release the clutch pedal. The voltage should scale smoothly (e.g., 0.5V to 4.5V). If the voltage drops out to 0V, stays flat, or is erratic, the potentiometer is internally faulty and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove the lower dash or steering console trim panels as necessary to access the clutch/inching pedal pivot assembly.

  3. Removal

    Unplug the electrical connector from the inching pedal potentiometer. Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the sensor to the pedal bracket. Pull the sensor straight off the pedal pivot shaft.

  4. Installation

    Align the drive tang or D-shaped slot on the new potentiometer with the pedal pivot shaft. Press the sensor into place and install the retaining screws. Do not overtighten, as the plastic housing can crack. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Reassembly

    Reinstall any removed cab trim panels and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    You must perform a dynamic transmission/clutch pedal calibration using the tractor's AFS Pro display monitor or a dealer diagnostic tool. The VCM needs to learn the new minimum (pedal released) and maximum (pedal fully depressed) voltage values of the new sensor. If calibration is not performed, the tractor may refuse to move or shift harshly.
