Case IH 684-07 - VCM – VCM: VCM Inching (clutch) pedal switch out of adjustment

The inching (clutch) pedal switch is out of its specified mechanical adjustment. If the pedal play is out of adjustment (e.g., less than 0.4 mm / 0.016 in.), the clutch oil pressure decreases even when the pedal is not being pressed. This causes the clutch to slip, which can lead to premature wear or complete burnout of the friction plates, powershift shift delays, and harsh or lazy shifting.

   Measure the physical free play of the inching pedal (should be between 0.4 mm / 0.016 in. and 1.1 mm / 0.043 in.)

   Verify clutch pressure matches main pump pressure (140-150 psi at idle) when the brake pedal is fully raised, and ensure inching pressure drops to exactly zero before brakes engage

   Inspect VCM wiring and connectors for corrosion, condensation, or broken wires that can disrupt the CAN controller signal

   Pre-Adjustment

   Prior to adjusting the inching pedal positioning, you must first adjust the brake linings, brake pedal, and master cylinder linkage.

   Switch Adjustment

   Adjust the inching pedal switch positioning so that the correct free play is achieved (between 0.4 mm and 1.1 mm).

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the VCM connectors. Clean the VCM pins and wiring connectors using a harness cleaner kit to ensure they are completely free of corrosion and condensation.

   Seal Connectors

   Apply dielectric grease to the connectors (CN1 and CN2) and add clear silicone to the backside of the connectors to prevent future moisture ingress.

   Calibration

   After mechanical adjustments are complete, perform a clutch fill time calibration routine to resolve any lingering harsh or lazy shifting symptoms.
