Case IH 7 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Hitch Raise/Lower Solenoids Open or short to ground

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault—either a broken connection (open circuit) or a short circuit to the ground—in the circuit that controls the solenoids responsible for raising and lowering the 3-point hitch.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the TMF controller to the hitch solenoids for continuity and ensure there are no rubbed wires causing a short to ground.

  2. Measure the resistance across the pins of the raise and lower solenoids using a multimeter (specifications vary by model: 3.8 - 4.2 ohms for older 7200 series Magnums, 6.4 to 6.8 ohms for 89 series Magnums). If the reading is infinite (open) or near zero (shorted), the solenoid coil has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoids

Locate the hitch raise and lower solenoid valves, typically mounted on the hydraulic pump or rear remote valve stack at the back of the tractor.

  2. Disconnect and Inspect

Unplug the electrical connectors to the solenoids. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. Test the Coil

Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil as outlined in the diagnostic checks.

  4. Replace if Faulty

If the solenoid resistance is out of specification, remove the retaining nut/clip and slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem. Install the new OEM solenoid coil and secure it.

  5. Verify Wiring

If the solenoid tests within spec, the fault lies in the wiring harness or the TMF control module. Repair any broken wires in the harness.

  6. Clear Codes

Once the repair is made, cycle the key, clear the stored error codes from the TMF module, and test the hitch raise/lower function to ensure the null/calibration is centered and the code does not return.
