Case IH 7014 – TMF (Transmission Management Function) Controller, Instrumentation Controller, or PTO Controller: Brake Lamp Relay Solenoid has failed Open or Short Circuit

Issue description

The system's controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for activating the brake lights. This means the circuit is either broken (open circuit) or the wiring/relay is shorted to ground or to a 12V power source, preventing the brake lamps from functioning correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Check the main fuse panel and inspect the fuse dedicated to the brake lamps/lighting to ensure it is not blown.

  2. Locate the Brake Lamp Relay (often designated as Relay B or Relay G) and check the socket and relay pins for corrosion, melting, or heat damage.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the relay coil (typically pins 85 and 86) for continuity. If there is no continuity, the relay coil is open.

  4. Test the wiring between the TMF/PTO controller and the relay block for continuity. Check for a short to ground or a short to 12V power.

  5. Verify that the left and right brake pedal switches are operating correctly and sending the proper voltage signal to the controller when depressed.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor, apply the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Relay Panel

    Open the chassis fuse block or cab relay center. On many Case IH models (like the Farmall series), this is located on the left-hand side of the steering column underneath the shrouding.

  3. Remove the Faulty Relay

    Pull the Brake Lamp Relay from its socket.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If diagnostic testing revealed a short or open wire in the harness, trace the wire from the relay block to the controller. Repair the damaged section using solder and heat-shrink tubing.

  5. Install the New Relay

    Plug the replacement 12V relay firmly into the socket, ensuring the pins align correctly with the terminals.

  6. Reassemble and Reconnect

    Reinstall any shrouding or panels removed to access the fuse box. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  7. Test Operation

    Turn the ignition key to the ON position and press the brake pedals. Verify that the rear brake lamps illuminate.

  8. Clear Fault Codes

    Use the tractor's in-cab diagnostic menu or a CAN-BUS diagnostic tool to clear the 7014 fault code from the controller's memory.
