Case IH 7016 (746.04) - DEC – PTO Controller or Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Differential Lock Solenoid Stuck On or Short to Ground

Issue description

The Differential Lock (DiffLock) Solenoid is stuck on or has a short to ground (GND). This means the electrical circuit controlling the differential lock solenoid is experiencing a short circuit to the chassis ground, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the controller to the difflock solenoid for damaged insulation, chafing, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Test the resistance of the difflock solenoid at the controller connector (e.g., PTO controller connector C057, pin 9). Clean the connection and mating pins.

  3. Test continuity between the controller pin and the chassis ground. A healthy differential lock solenoid should read a resistance of approximately 8.5 to 9.7 ohms. A reading of 0 ohms confirms a dead short to ground.

  4. Try switching the difflock solenoid with an identical adjacent solenoid on the valve block (such as the modulation solenoid or draft control solenoid). If the fault code changes or the symptom moves to the other system, the solenoid coil has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the solenoid

    Locate the differential lock solenoid. On many models, it is located at the rear of the tractor, under the platform on the right side of the hydraulic control valve block.

  2. Disconnect power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.

  3. Disconnect wiring

    Unplug the 2-terminal plug-and-harness connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Clean the area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid base to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic valve block during removal.

  5. Remove the solenoid

    Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty differential lock solenoid from the transmission/valve housing.

  6. Install the new part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Install the new solenoid and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect wiring

    Plug the 2-terminal electrical connector back into the new solenoid.

  8. Test system

    Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes from the TCU/PTO controller, and test the tractor to ensure the differential lock engages and disengages properly without throwing a code.
