Case IH 7018 (746.15) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Armrest Controller: Differential Lock Solenoid - Short to +12 Volts (Short to High Voltage)

Issue description

The controller is detecting voltage on the differential lock solenoid circuit that exceeds the expected maximum threshold. This typically means the signal wire is chafed and touching a 12V power source, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally and shorted.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the differential lock solenoid (typically located on the rear axle or transmission valve block) for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation that could cause the signal wire to touch a 12V power wire.

  2. Isolate the component by disconnecting the electrical connector at the Differential Lock Solenoid. Turn the key on and check the active fault codes. If the code changes to an 'Open Circuit' code, the solenoid is internally shorted. If it remains 'Short to High Voltage', the harness is shorted.

  3. With the solenoid disconnected and the tractor keyed on, use a multimeter to probe the signal wire on the harness side. If it reads a constant 12V when the diff-lock switch is off, the harness is shorted to power.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the differential lock valve block. On most Case IH tractors, this is mounted on the rear axle housing or the side of the transmission casing.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the differential lock solenoid. Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Depending on the specific part design, either remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off, or unthread the entire solenoid valve cartridge from the block.

  5. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic oil. Thread the new solenoid into the valve block (or slide the new coil onto the stem) and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the inactive fault codes from the monitor, and engage the differential lock switch to verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
