Case IH 7018 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU), PTO Controller, or Armrest Controller: Difflock driver over temperature

Issue description

When the differential lock solenoid or its wiring shorts to a high voltage source (battery), it draws excessive current. This causes the internal driver circuit within the control module to overheat, triggering the 7018 'driver over temperature' code.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the controller (e.g., PTO controller at the rear of the tractor) and disconnect the main harness connector (e.g., Connector C057, black).

  2. Inspect the specific pin for the difflock (e.g., Pin 9) for corrosion or damage. Test the continuity between the pin and the chassis ground.

  3. Measure the resistance of the difflock solenoid; it should measure approximately 8.5 to 9.7 ohms. If it reads significantly lower or shows continuity to a voltage source, the solenoid is shorted.

  4. Trace the wiring from the controller to the difflock solenoid to ensure the harness has not rubbed through and shorted against a 12V power source (battery).

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical damage to the controller's driver circuit. Ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the circuits.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    The difflock solenoid is typically located on the transmission control valve block. On many models (like the Maxxum series), it is found at the rear under the platform on the right side of the control valve.

  3. Swap Test (Optional)

    If you need to verify the solenoid is the culprit before buying a part, you can temporarily swap the difflock solenoid with the modulation solenoid (often located directly above or below it on the same valve block). Note: If you move a bad solenoid to the modulation valve, the tractor will not move.

  4. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the 2-terminal plug-and-harness connector. Remove the retaining nut/fastener and slide the solenoid coil off the valve cartridge, or unscrew the entire cartridge depending on the specific valve block design.

  5. Install the Replacement

    Install the new solenoid, torque to OEM specifications, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Clear Codes & Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes from the controller, and test the differential lock engagement in the field. Warning: Do not test the differential lock at high speeds or on paved roads, as this can cause severe steering difficulty and mechanical damage.
