Case IH 7020 – Transmission Control Module (TCM), Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), or PTO/Rear Controller: DiffLock Solenoid - LSD short to high voltage / Seed Controller Section 2 PWM driver fault

There is a documentation discrepancy: Code 7020 officially corresponds to a Seed Controller Section 2 PWM driver fault, Right high beam short circuit to positive, or Wear upper pressure sensor. However, if diagnosed as a DiffLock Solenoid short to high voltage, it indicates the control module is detecting battery voltage on the solenoid's signal or return wire, typically due to a rubbed wiring harness touching a live power wire or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

   Test the resistance of the difflock solenoid directly at the controller connector (e.g., connector C057, pin 9 to chassis ground). Resistance should be approximately 8.5 to 9.7 ohms.

   Inspect the pins in the controller connector for corrosion or damage. Clean the mating pins and connectors.

   Test the wiring from the controller to the difflock solenoid for a short to a high voltage source (battery power).

   Secure the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent static sparks or accidental shorts.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the differential lock solenoid valve, which is typically mounted on the rear axle housing or the transmission hydraulic valve block.

   Isolate the Fault

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid. Re-measure the resistance directly at the solenoid's pins. If the resistance is outside the 8.5 - 9.7 ohm range, the solenoid is internally shorted and must be replaced.

   Repair the Harness

   If the solenoid tests good, trace the wiring harness back to the control module. Locate the area where the wire is chafed and shorting to a 12V power source. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged wire.

   Replace the Solenoid (if faulty)

   Unthread the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil to the hydraulic valve stem. Remove the old coil and install the new one. (If the valve stem itself is sticking and not letting oil to the axle, the entire cartridge valve may need replacement).

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the harness, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes. Start the tractor and engage the momentary difflock switch to verify the dash light illuminates and the solenoid engages.
