Case IH 71 – Transmission Electronic Control Unit (TECU / ECM) or PTO Controller / Armrest Controller: Transmission Gear Disengagement Issue (F/R Synchronizer) or PTO Switch Stuck ON

Fault Code 71 indicates a Transmission Gear Disengagement Issue (F/R SYNCHRONIZER UNABLE TO CHANGE POSITION DURING START UP) or a Top FET Sense Err in Autopilot systems. Note: A PTO switch stuck ON for more than 30 seconds is actually Code 37 or 159, but diagnostics for both are provided due to documentation discrepancy.

   If diagnosing Code 71 (F/R Synchronizer): Check the transmission status lamps on the dash (Hi/Rabbit and Lo/Turtle lamps). If Code 71 is active, they will flash alternately.

   If diagnosing Code 71 (F/R Synchronizer): Attempt to engage the reverse gear several times manually to see if the error condition clears and the synchronizer frees up.

   If diagnosing PTO Switch Fault (Code 37/159): Visually and mechanically inspect the remote fender PTO switch and the cab PTO switch to ensure neither is physically jammed or packed with dirt/debris.

   If diagnosing PTO Switch Fault (Code 37/159): Perform a voltage leak test by disconnecting the switch and testing the input 12V wire (look for a 5V to 7V leak on the no-voltage side).

   If diagnosing PTO Switch Fault (Code 37/159): Inspect the fender switch wiring harness for a short to +12V or an open circuit.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to protect the Armrest/PTO controllers.

   Access the Switch

   Remove the retaining bezel or mounting screws for the remote fender PTO switch (or cab switch, depending on which is stuck).

   Disconnect & Isolate

   Unplug the electrical connector from the switch.

   Test the Circuit

   Turn the battery back on and use a diagnostic tool or the AFS Pro 700 display to see if the active fault code changes from 'stuck ON' to an 'open circuit' code (e.g., Code 158). If it does, the wiring is good and the switch is the definitive failure point.

   Replace the Switch

   Plug the new OEM PTO command switch into the harness.

   Reassemble & Clear Codes

   Mount the switch back into the fender/console. Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the inactive fault codes from the display. Test PTO engagement.
