Case IH 7103 – Steering Controller: Steering angle plausibility error (Auto guidance only)
Issue description
The auto-guidance system (AFS AccuGuide) is receiving erratic, absent, or out-of-range feedback from the steering angle position sensor, causing auto-steer/precision guidance functions to be disabled or impaired.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Magnum
- Puma
- Steiger
- Maxxum
- Farmall
- Vestrum
- Quantum
- Patriot
Check the cause
Inspect the steering angle sensor (located on the front steering axle) and its linkage for physical damage, loose mounting hardware, or misalignment.
Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for open circuits, or short circuits to ground or Vcc.
Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference power supply from the controller.
Access the diagnostic menu to check the displayed potentiometer reading in real-time while manually turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock. Look for dead spots or erratic voltage jumps.
Attempt to recalibrate the steering angle sensor (center, left, and right limits). If the sensor fails calibration, it is internally faulty and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure no power is going to the steering controller.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the steering angle position sensor on the front steering axle.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Unbolt the sensor housing and carefully detach it from the steering linkage.
Installation
Mount the new steering angle sensor in the exact orientation as the old one. Secure the mounting bolts and reattach the linkage.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor and reconnect the tractor's battery.
Calibration
Perform a steering angle sensor calibration so the steering controller can learn the new sensor's parameters. Enter the calibration menu (often the "H8" or Proximity Sensor Calibration menu on the dash/display) and follow the prompts to record the center, full-left, and full-right steering positions.
Clear Codes
Use the diagnostic menu (e.g., the "HC" menu) to clear all stored error codes and verify that code 7103 does not return upon engaging the auto-guidance system.
