Case IH 72 – Transmission Controller (TCU / Transmission ECU): Transmission Oil Temperature is above 122 deg. C
Issue description
This code indicates that the transmission fluid has exceeded safe operating temperatures (122°C / 251°F), which can lead to degraded lubrication and clutch slippage. Alternatively, it can indicate a failure in the sensor or its wiring circuit, causing the system to read a falsely high temperature.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MX Magnum
- MX Magnum & TG Series
- Magnum Series (180, 190, 200, 210, 220, 225, 240)
- Puma Series (130 through 240)
- Maxxum Series (110 through 150)
- Steiger Series
- Older MX Series (MX100, MX110, MX120, MX135)
Check the cause
Verify Actual Temperature: Use an infrared thermometer or temperature gun on the transmission gearbox case to check the physical temperature of the oil. If the temperature is well below 122°C but the code is active, the sensor or wiring is faulty.
Check Fluid Levels: Ensure the transmission/hydraulic oil is at the correct level. Low fluid can cause rapid overheating.
Inspect the Transmission Cooler: Check the transmission oil cooler and radiator fins for mud, debris, or blockages that would restrict airflow and cooling capacity.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor. Look for chafed wires, shorts to ground, or an open circuit that could cause the ECU to read maximum resistance (often interpreted as high heat).
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Allow the machine to cool.
