Case IH 734-00 - DEC – DEC: Transmission C1 clutch solenoid maximum calibration current limit exceeded
Issue description
The Transmission C1 clutch solenoid is drawing a current that is above the normal operational range (maximum calibration current limit exceeded). This typically means there is a short to the +battery circuit in the machine harness, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally and is drawing excessive current. When this fault is active, the system response usually disables the lockup clutch, and only the gears engaged by the remaining functional solenoids will be available.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
- Case IH Steiger Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Check the energize circuit of the C1 clutch solenoid for a short to the +battery circuit.
Inspect the transmission wiring harness connectors (specifically Connector No. 31 for the C1 Clutch Solenoid on Magnum models). Clean the contacts and inspect the wires for damaged insulation caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.
Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance of the circuit. A low resistance measurement (or a short to ground/power) indicates a short in the machine harness.
Repair steps
Prepare the Machine
Park the tractor on firm, level ground, apply the parking brake, and shut down the engine.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shock or further damage to the DEC controller while testing.
Access the Transmission Valve Body
Locate the transmission powershift valve assembly where the C1 through C5 clutch solenoids are housed.
Test the Solenoid
Disconnect the C1 clutch solenoid (Connector 31) and test the solenoid coil resistance directly. If the solenoid is shorted internally (drawing excessive current), it must be replaced.
Repair or Replace the Harness
If the solenoid tests within specification, the fault lies in the wiring. Repair the shorted section of the machine harness or replace the harness entirely.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the harness and battery. You may need to use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's ICU keypad (INCR/DECR keys, depending on software version) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and verify that the C1 clutch calibrates successfully and the transmission shifts through all gears without defaulting to limp mode.
