Case IH 734-04 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Range Clutch C1 Solenoid - Voltage Below Normal, or Shorted to Low Source
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting that the electrical circuit for the C1 clutch solenoid has dropped below the normal operating voltage range. This typically indicates a short to ground in the wiring harness, an open circuit, a failed solenoid coil (internal short), or severe corrosion at the connector.

Check the cause
Inspect the transmission control valve body wiring harness for visible damage, rubbing, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the C1 clutch solenoid connector (e.g., Connector No. 31) and check for corrosion, bent pins, or fluid intrusion.
Measure the resistance of the C1 solenoid coil using a multimeter. A reading of 0 ohms (dead short) or infinite (open circuit) indicates a failed coil.
Check the wiring harness from the TCU to the solenoid for continuity and ensure there is no short-to-ground on the power supply wire.
If the C1 solenoid is identical to the C2 or C3 solenoids, swap them. If the fault code changes to follow the solenoid (e.g., SPN 735 for C2), the solenoid is the culprit.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and allow the transmission fluid to cool. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve assembly on the side of the transmission. The C1 PWM Solenoid and Valve Assembly will be clearly marked or identifiable via the service manual diagram.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission housing.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the C1 clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the C1 solenoid in the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid out (be prepared for a small amount of transmission fluid to drain).
Installation
Coat the O-rings and valve components of the new solenoid with clean transmission oil (Case IH Akcela Nexplore fluid is recommended) prior to assembly. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block.
Torque
Tighten the retaining bolts to the OEM torque specification (e.g., 27 Nm / 20 lb-ft for standard Magnum/Maxxum valve blocks).
Reassembly & Calibration
Reconnect the electrical connector. Clear the fault codes from the display monitor. Start the tractor and perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration procedure, which is strictly required anytime a transmission clutch solenoid is replaced to ensure smooth shifting.
