734-05 - DEC

Case IH 734-05 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electronic Control Unit (ECU): Transmission Range Clutch C1 Solenoid - Current below normal or open circuit

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected that the electrical current flowing through the C1 clutch solenoid circuit is lower than the expected valid range. This condition almost always points to an open circuit, a broken wire, a disconnected wiring harness, or a completely failed (open) solenoid coil.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, 7110-7140)
  • Steiger Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the harness connectors at both the transmission C1 clutch solenoid and the ECU for disconnected plugs, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or damaged wire insulation.

  2. Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness using a diagnostic tool to detect intermittent shorts or open circuits.

  3. Disconnect the harness from the C1 solenoid and measure the resistance across the solenoid pins (infinite resistance indicates an internally failed coil).

  4. Disconnect the harness from both the ECU and the solenoid, and measure the resistance of the wires between the connectors to verify continuity and check for an open circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Turn the key start switch and the main battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

Ensure power is disconnected before beginning repairs.

  2. Locate the C1 Clutch Solenoid on the transmission valve body.

It is often grouped with C3, C5, and Reverse solenoids depending on the exact model.

  3. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the C1 clutch solenoid and the ECU.

Prepare the connectors for cleaning and inspection.

  4. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors.

Use an approved electrical contact cleaner.

  5. Perform a light pull test on each of the wires associated with the C1 circuit at the connector.

Apply approximately 10 lbs (45 N) of force to ensure the pins are securely crimped and seated.

  6. Repair or replace the faulty component based on diagnostic readings.

If the harness is open/broken: Repair the broken wire in the machine harness or replace the harness section entirely. If the solenoid coil is open: Unbolt and remove the faulty C1 clutch solenoid from the transmission valve block and install a new OEM replacement solenoid.

  7. Reconnect all harness connectors.

Ensure they are fully seated and the locking clips are completely fastened.

  8. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch back to the ON position.

    Restore power to the machine.

  9. Operate the vehicle or cycle the transmission.

Verify if the SPN 734 FMI 5 code changes from 'Active' to 'Inactive' or clears entirely.
