Case IH 734-07 - DEC – Transmission Controller: Transmission C1 clutch solenoid failure

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical anomaly (such as an open circuit, a short circuit, or out-of-range resistance) or a mechanical failure within the C1 clutch proportional solenoid valve.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the C1 clutch solenoid (designated as Connector No. 31 on Magnum models) for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.

  2. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the C1 solenoid coil. Compare it to OEM specifications to rule out an internal short or open circuit. Check for continuity between the Transmission Controller harness and the solenoid connector.

  3. Connect a pressure gauge to the C1 clutch test port. Start the engine and observe the pressure. With the clutch pedal depressed, pressure should be 0 psi. When engaged, it should rise smoothly to operating pressure. If pressure is erratic, drops to zero unexpectedly, or if the engine stalls, the pilot spool valve may be stuck open or the solenoid is failing mechanically.

  4. Verify the clutch pedal disconnect switch is properly adjusted and not shorted (maladjusted/always closed), as this can interfere with solenoid operation and throw related codes.

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine.

  2. Disconnect battery and relieve pressure

    Disconnect the negative battery cable and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  3. Locate solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the C1 clutch solenoid.

  4. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt and debris from contaminating the transmission valve body.

  5. Disconnect wiring

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the C1 solenoid.

  6. Remove bolts

    Remove the retaining bolts securing the solenoid valve to the valve block.

  7. Extract solenoid

    Carefully extract the old solenoid valve assembly.

  8. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new replacement solenoid with clean, approved Case IH hydraulic/transmission fluid (Hy-Tran).

  9. Install new solenoid

    Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and tighten the retaining bolts to the specified OEM torque.

  10. Reconnect wiring

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  11. Test for leaks

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and check for any hydraulic leaks around the new valve.

  12. Clear fault codes

    Clear the fault codes from the Transmission Controller.

  13. Calibrate transmission

    Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's display or diagnostic tool to ensure the TCM learns the engagement characteristics of the new C1 solenoid.
