Case IH 735-17 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or main vehicle ECU: Transmission Range Clutch C2 Solenoid - Minimum calibration current limit exceeded
Issue description
This code is triggered when the transmission controller attempts to actuate or calibrate the C2 clutch, but the electrical current drawn by the C2 proportional solenoid falls below the minimum acceptable threshold.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Maxxum
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Steiger
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission valve block and check the C2 clutch solenoid connector for corrosion, pushed pins, or moisture intrusion.
Disconnect the C2 solenoid and measure the resistance across the coil pins using a multimeter (compare to OEM spec; infinite reading indicates open coil, very high reading indicates internal degradation).
Check for harness continuity and verify there is no short-to-ground or short-to-power on the signal and return wires between the TCU and the C2 solenoid.
Ensure transmission fluid is at the correct level and operating temperature to rule out mechanical failures (like a blown jump tube or leaking clutch piston seal).
Repair steps
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve assembly on the side or top of the transmission housing. Identify the C2 clutch proportional solenoid.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit.
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the C2 solenoid in the valve block and pull the solenoid out.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore). Insert it into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key on and clear the inactive 735-17 fault code from the TCU memory.
Perform Clutch Calibration
Bring the tractor's transmission fluid up to normal operating temperature. Enter the tractor's diagnostic menu (or use the Electronic Diagnostic Tool - EDT) and initiate a full transmission clutch calibration routine. The TCU must relearn the fill time and engagement current for the new C2 solenoid.
