Case IH 736-00 - DEC – Transmission Controller: Transmission C3 clutch solenoid maximum calibration current limit exceeded

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected that the electrical current required to operate or calibrate the C3 clutch solenoid valve has exceeded the maximum allowable design limit. This condition typically points to a short circuit in the wiring harness, a shorted solenoid coil, or a stuck solenoid valve that is drawing excessive amperage.

Check the cause

  1. Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller down to the solenoids under the cab. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or damage.

  2. Disconnect the transmission controller connectors (e.g., C350 and C353). Measure the resistance of the C3 clutch solenoid circuit on the wiring harness side (for example, between cavity 9 of connector C350 and cavity 8 of connector C353, depending on your specific model's pinout). The resistance should be approximately 10 ohms. If the resistance is near 0, there is a short circuit; if it is dramatically higher, there is an open circuit.

  3. Locate the C3 Clutch Solenoid (identified in the service manual as Connector No. 32). Inspect the X-168 terminal connector for corrosion, pushed pins, or melted plastic.

  4. Verify that the battery voltage is within normal operating range and check the ground strap between the engine and chassis to ensure the controller is receiving clean power.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on firm ground, apply the parking brake, shut down the engine, and chock the wheels. Ensure the machine is not electrically charged.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the transmission control valve block. The C3 clutch solenoid is located on the Powershift Valve Speed section alongside the C1 and C5 solenoids.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector (Connector No. 32 / X-168) from the C3 clutch solenoid. Remove the mounting bolts and the cover plate securing the solenoid to the valve body.

  4. Replacement

    Remove the faulty PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) C3 clutch solenoid. Install the new solenoid, ensuring that all new O-rings and gaskets are properly seated to prevent internal pressure leaks.

  5. Reassembly

    Reinstall the cover plate and mounting bolts. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  6. Mandatory Calibration

    After service work has been performed on a transmission valve or solenoid, a clutch calibration is strictly required. Warm the transmission oil to more than 60°C (140°F). Ensure the engine speed is maintained at 1200 RPM or higher during calibration. Initiate the transmission calibration mode via the cab display so the controller can learn the fill times and current limits for the new C3 solenoid.
